Gerald Fox: Living London

The second exhibition at 176 will be a new commission realized as part of a residency working with the Collection curator and the building. Opening in early 2008 it will present new work by Gerald Fox (UK).

The exhibition includes eight new short films that present a personal portrait of London and evoke the physical sensations of being immersed in its changing environments. Fox's cinematic vision revels in the city as it journeys into night, or the visual cacophony of Notting Hill Carnival, and the quiet solitude of walking through the Victorian cemetery in Nunhead. As we follow Fox’s viewpoint from film to film, we are physically transported into these experiences, made aware of every motion on this journey as it unfolds.

Interaction Project

Gerald Fox will be making a final set of films in response to the area immediately around 176 Prince of Wales Road. Fox will work in collaboration with young people who live in the vicinity to create a series of simultaneous short films that reveal their own personal viewpoints of the area. The final collection of films will be shown in a dedicated space at 176 for the length of the exhibition.

Gerald Fox will work with a group of young people through the autumn of 2007, guiding their research and the development of their ideas for filming. Then working with him and his assistant cameraman, each participant will learn how to use a Super 16mm film camera and get the opportunity to direct and shoot their own short film. They will spend a day working with a professional editor to learn about post-production and edit their final pieces.
