Alban Hajdinaj
Born Albania, 1974
Painting Lessons, 2008
Printed canvas
40 x 50 cm
Series of 21Alban Hajdinaj has produced a series of 21 canvases of illustrations taken from a Russian book from 1959 for German language learning. The artist comments “I am fascinated by these drawings. They perfectly embody the dictatorship of the written language structure. (It is not a coincidence that the book belongs to a dark age like that of the Soviet regime.)†The collector is invited to paint or draw on the canvas: colour the drawing, erase it, scribble it - or keep it as it is. In this sense, they function as potential works rather than finished ones. Hajdinaj is interested in questioning the structure of the language/image as well as the physical production and technologies of artworks. The work will share the artist’s practice with the collector. There are a multitude of possible outcomes for the work: the owner’s physical marking, its destruction or being left intact. The artist has requested that the purchaser completes the work and sends a digital photo of the completed and installed work to 176.

Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard
Born UK, 1973 & 1972
the thin red line, 2008
Embroidered woolen scarf
Edition of 25Based on the traditional Oxbridge academic scarf, ‘the thin red line’ is for those who stand their ground, a sartorial symbol of defiance. The scarf embodies the form of a thin red line, and the embroidered motto refers to the origins of the title. ‘The phrase ‘the thin red line’ derives from the Crimean War, when during the Battle of Balaclava on 25th October 1854 the heavily depleted British Army’s 93rd regiment faced a Russian cavalry charge with a line of men only two deep instead of the conventional four. The soldiers were led by Sir Colin Campbell, who is said to have told his men “There is no retreat from here, men. You must die where you standâ€. Forsyth and Pollard’s interest in coded communication and secret societies first emerged as part of their ‘Silent Sound’ project produced with J. Spaceman for A Foundation during the 2006 Liverpool Biennial.

Susan Collis
Born UK, 1957, based London
Susan Collis’ conceptually-based practice manifests itself in trompe l’oeils of paint spatters, stained clothes, discarded screws and tools that form the remnants of mts’ produts’ production. The dusty, dirty residues are replaced with vinyl, precious metals and stones; yielding small perceptual shifts that allude to larger implications on the objects of art and craft production.
For An Archaeology Collis has produced a Garnet Rawl Plug to be installed into any wall. Measuring 8mm in diameter it is embedded into the wall.

Liz Neal
Born UK, 1973, based Suffolk
Liz Neal represents scenes of riotous female debauchery and landscapes of fleshy saturated colours and lusciousness in her paintings and sculptures, nodding to a long, concrete history of painting techniques and subjects, but with brash pop references in the imagery.
For An Archaeology Liz Neal has produced a special limited edition artwork The Queens.
